The Cabinet Council is currently considering final approval of a measure that will exempt many energy-saving appliances from import duties.
If approved as it now stands, the measure would exempt air conditioners that have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of 10 or greater, while continuing to impose a 10 percent tariff on other models.
The same rule applies to household refrigerators or freezers.
It would also waive tariffs on nickel-cadmium electric accumulators, which had to previously pay a rate of 15 percent. The measure would also exempt solar water heaters, wind power equipment, fluorescent lamps and energy-efficient washing machines, among other items.
The measure is designed to cut the country’s energy consumption by reducing demand through the use of more efficient appliances.
