Martinelli mum on vp pick
There is a lot of speculation about the identity of Cambio Democrático presidential candidate Ricardo Martinelli’s vice presidential candidate, but it is clear who isn’t in the running.
“He is not going to go with someone like Sarah Palin,” said Martinelli supporter José Ricardo Fábrega, referring to the former running mate of U.S. presidential candidate John McCain, who was widely criticized for her lack of experience and knowledge, particularly about foreign policy issues.
Fábrega said that the person tapped by Martinelli, who has formed an alliance with the Unión Patriótica party by promising officials from that organization high-ranking positions if elected, will have political experience and an understanding of the issues facing the country.
While Balbina Herrera, Martinelli’s primary opponent in the upcoming election, picked a party insider to be her running mate, some have speculated that Martinelli will seek someone from a rival party, namely Alberto Vallarino, who lost his bid to be the Partido Panameñista’s candidate. Vallarino, however, said he is not interested in the job.
“I am committed to ensuring the election of candidates nominated by my party,” he said.
A similar statement was made by former Panameñista presidential candidate José Miguel Alemán.
Martinelli has not given any hints about whom he might pick. He is expected to make that announcement on Jan. 11.
“The country can know on that day,” said Cambio Democrático official Roberto Henríquez.
