Bridge of the americas to be closed for tests
The Bridge of the americas will be closed tonight, tomorrow night and Thursday night so that tests can be conducted on the cables to support the structure.
The bridge will be closed between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. Traffic will be diverted to the Centennial Bridge.
Randy Mendieta, the Ministry of Public Works official responsible for the Bridge of the americas project, explained that engineers need to know the weight being supported by the existing cables so that they can calibrate the cables that will replace them.
Mendieta explained that the tests had been conducted in September, but a motorist avoided security measures and, while trying to use the bridge, crashed into the computer that was collecting the data, causing it to be lost.
