Attorney General Ana Matilde Gómez said yesterday that she has formed a specialized team of prosecutors to examine the business dealings of financial firm DMG to determine if it engaged in any criminal acts.
Gómez called for patience, because getting to the bottom of the firm's complex business transactions is expected to take time. She said this is because the company created a “corporate veil” by using limited liability subsidiaries to mask some of its transactions, making it much harder for investigators to examine its finances.
It is unclear what impact DMG's operations will have on investors in Panama, but many people are concerned that their savings have vanished, much as they have in Colombia, where DMG founder David Murcia Guzmán faces charges of money laundering and fraud.
