Ministry to purchase rice
The Ministry of Agricultural Development will purchase, through the Institute of Agricultural Marketing, 1 million quintals of rice from local producers, to be sold in the country under the brand name Compita.
The decision was announced yesterday by the new minister of Agricultural Development, Olmedo Espino, who said that he plans to establish a close relationship between farmers, millers and the government.
The ministry plans to purchase 300,000 quintals from the Association of Rice Producers of Chiriquí, while the remaining 700,000 will come from other cooperatives throughout the country.
Espino said the measure ensures that all locally-produced rice will be purchased, alleviating fears among farmers that they would not be able to sell their crops.
