A total of 29,668 vehicles in Panama City have expired plates, according to records handled by the Municipality of Panama.
This represents $1.6 million in fees owed to the municipality, although it has collected $2.6 million in late fees so far this year.
Mario Miranda, the municipal treasurer, argued that the ATTT, which handles traffic issues, should be more diligent in fining drivers who operate vehicles with expired plates.
Miguel Martínez, the secretary general of the ATTT, admitted that there is a lack of supervision.
“We have 150 monitors, but we are more focused on transport issues,” he explained.
