Maritime school presents 2009 budget
The Maritime University of Panama has submitted a proposed 2009 budget of $7.4 million to the National Assembly, which is 9 percent more than its current spending plan.
According to university Chancellor Victor Luna, $6.9 million is earmarked for operating expenses and $500,000 for capital improvements.
The school's revenue comes from three sources, the Panama Maritime Authority, the central government and tuition paid by students.
Luna told legislators that the budget increase is attributable to rising costs of equipment and building maintenance.
During the budget hearing, legislators asked about the academic development of the university, its operations and the handling of cadets. The commissioners encouraged the school to keep its teaching standards in line with international requirements.
