Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (Anam) officials planted 2,000 trees in the Parque Nacional Camino de Cruces yesterday to help eradicate “paja canalera.”
Paja canalera, or canal straw, is an invasive species which has crowded out native plants in some areas. The trees are meant to create shade that will prevent the paja canalera from taking hold in the park.
With the planting of the 2,000 trees, Panama has now exceeded the United Nation's Program for the Environment target, which called for 4 million trees to be planted in the country.
The species that were planted yesterday included guayacán, bitter cedar and mahogany.
