Authorities in the province of Los Santos have petitioned for a local property belonging to the Banco de Desarrollo Agropecuario (BDA) be converted into a protected area, with the aim of preserving the El Cacao watershed, an important reserve located in the highlands district of Macaracas.
Yesterday, officials with the Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, the Instituto de Acueductos y Alcantarillados Nacionales (Idaan) and representatives of Macaracas submitted their proposal to BDA national manager Roberto Jiménez.
The 107-hectare property in question, lies on the border of Buena Vista and Quema, in the Mogollón region of Macaracas.
Samuel Castro, director of IDAAN in Los Santos, lauded the initiative, claiming that it will ensure that the watershed will be preserved for future generations.
