Wires put pedestrians in danger

LA PRENSA/Virgilio De León
danger: La Chorrera residents are concerned that wires hanging near a pedestrian bridge will cause an accident.1086220

Osvaldo González, a student at the Escuela Victoria D'Spinay in La Chorrera, worries about cables hanging near a footbridge he uses every day to get to class.

González doesn't know if the wires are electrical, but he knows enough not to touch them. Still, they pose a danger to him and other pedestrians using the bridge.

The wires were rerouted across the bridge during the project to expand the Arraiján-La Chorrera Highway.

Ilida Méndez, who often uses the bridge, said that the wires do not pose a danger during the day, but rather at night, when they are tough to see. She fears that she or someone else will trip over them while going down the bridge's stairs.

Judy Meana, a spokesperson for Unión Fenosa, said the wires do not belong to the company. Instead, they are the property of Cable and Wireless. Company spokesman Mara Rivera said that they will be removed as soon as a contractor is found that can do the work.
