A Chinese consul assigned to Panama, Cheng Maw Shih, 54, was stabbed twice during a robbery outside a restaurant Monday night in Colón.
He was treated at a private hospital, where he received stitches, police said.
Shih was attacked on Calle 10 as he was leaving the restaurant. Two robbers, who police said are teens, approached the consul and took $50 and a cell phone valued at $200 from him. He was stabbed in the back and left arm as he climbed into a vehicle to flee from the scene.
The government has tried various programs to cut down on crime by youths, including establishing a curfew and increasing penalties for offenders.
