Candidate ruled ineligible to run

A controversial former politician has been disqualified by the Tribunal Electoral (TE) from seeking office in the near future.

Panameñista Party legislative candidate Aydée Milanés de Lay has been disqualified from running in the 2009 election because of issues surrounding her residency.

Milanés de Lay was born in Colombia, and although she has resided in Panama for a number of years, the TE ruled that she did not meet the requirements to hold office.

She had served in the Asamblea Nacional for 10 years before losing her seat in 2004 after she dropped out of the race amidst accusation that she used public funds to influence voters.
