Activities on coiba still largely unregulated

The Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (Anam) has still not passed regulations regarding activities in Parque Nacional Coiba (PNC).

The Asamblea Nacional approved the creation of the 270,000 hectare PNC on July 26, 2004. At the time, the government set a three-month deadline for creating regulations to deal with activities inside the park.

Alida Spadafora, executive director of the Asociación Nacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, said that Anam's tardiness in regulating activities within the park has led to numerous instances of poaching and illegal fishing taking place there.

“It’s sad that Anam has not issued these regulations,” he said.
