Accident investigation viewed differently

Panamanian officials and the relatives of six Chileans killed in a helicopter crash in Calidonia on May 29 seem to be at odds over the progress and expected outcome of an investigation into the accident.

Family members held a meeting with Panamanian officials on June 26 to discuss the progress of the investigation. While Panamanian officials described the meeting as a chance to provide an update about the investigation, the family members apparently viewed it much differently.

In comments made to a Chilean newspaper, family members said that they issued a series of “strong demands” at that meeting, most notably that the investigation be carried out quickly, and with “respect and dignity” for the victims. Family members also said that they expect the final report to generate “tension.”

Panamanian officials disputed the report carried by the Chilean newspaper, and said the family members never made any demands during the meeting.
