Relatives of the six Chileans who died in the crash of helicopter SAN-100 in May have hired a lawyer to oversee the investigation of the incident.

That lawyer, Alvaro Baeza, as well as other Chilean officials, met with Attorney General Ana Matilde Gómez yesterday to discuss the status of the ongoing investigation.

A preliminary report about the incident has been released to the Chilean government, but Panamanian officials said that a full report will not be available until an analysis of the helicopter's engines has been completed.

Baeza said that the families are not focused on the possibility of criminal complaints being filed in the case, but said that they are simply trying to find out what happened.

The crash killed six Chileans who were in Panama for a regional conference. Among those killed was Chile's top police official.

Gómez said she assured the Chilean delegation that the investigation is being conducted in a timely manner, and its findings will be objective.

The cause of the crash is believed to be engine failure, though a definitive answer is not expected until the investigation has been completed.
