Inmates worried about TB cases

LA PRENSA
sick:Prison officials are working to contain newly-reported tuberculosis cases at La Joya prison.1002364

Inmates at Centro Penitenciario La Joya are scared because of reports of a tuberculosis outbreak.

In a phone call to La Prensa yesterday, an inmate said that three cases have been reported in the past week.

Those who became ill are all detained in the same area, known as pabellón 7.

Prison Director Luis Gordon said he was made aware of the situation last Wednesday and steps are being taken to control it. He said that, as of yesterday, he had not received any reports of new infections, though inmates claim there are two new cases.

The prison had 26 reported cases of tuberculosis last year. Those who become sick are isolated from the general prison population. Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease which is fatal about 20 percent of the time.
