Over 400 protesters released
The Policía Nacional said it fined protestors $25 each for the damage they caused. That means authorities collected $10,350 in the aftermath of Wednesday’s events.
More than 400 members of the Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de las Construcción y Similares (Suntracs) were released yesterday after paying a $25 fine for the damage they caused, according to the Policía Nacional (PN). They had been arrested during confrontations with police last Wednesday
A judge had initially determined that each detainee should pay a fine of $60, but lowered the amount after talking to legal representatives for Suntracs. Even so, that means police collected over $10,000 from the protesters.
Fifty-one other workers arrested during yesterday's disturbances were turned over to a State prosecuting attorney for the crime of damaging State property. Two Colombians detained during the confrontation were in the country illegally and were remanded to immigration authorities for deportation.
The Policía Nacional also reported that Enrique Thomas was run over by a truck yesterday morning while waiting for the release of a family member from the PN's headquarters in Ancón.
