Officers hurt in attack on police substation
The police substation in the Colón neighborhood where the Airomi Smith lived was attacked last Wednesday evening. Smith was the worker killed by a police officer during demonstrations earlier that day. Four officers were wounded by gunfire, and a fifth was struck by a rock.
Police subcommissioner Javier Castillo said that at approximately 5:00 p.m. some people in the community started throwing stones and other objects at the police installation, creating a state of alarm. Shots directed at the building followed, striking one officer the right tibia and another in the right ankle. A third officer was hit in the right foot. The fourth officer suffered wounds to his big toe on the left foot.
Reinforcements were sent from Colón, and in an operation aimed at apprehending the culprits, police raided various multifamily residences in the area. They took in various suspects, three firarms and ammunition.
