Authorities promote water conservation

The first "feria del agua," or water fair, will take place starting today and continue until Sunday in the village of Santa Rita de Boquerón in Chiriquí.

The fair, according to the organizers, is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of watersheds and their sources, such as those nearby in the area known as Chorro Blanco.

The event will feature cultural and folkloric shows, organizers said, as well as the sale of crops and livestock produced in the area.

Félix Muñoz, one of the organizers, said that there is a shortage of clean water in Panama.

"People need to understand why this situation is occurring and what are the mechanisms to improve the water resources in the country," he said.

Muñoz said that an aqueduct system will be installed in Chorro Blanco with an investment of several million dollars.
