Cabinet to create new customs authority

The Cabinet approved yesterday the first of several laws proposed by President Martín Torrijos last December. The law regards thecustoms sector and the establishment of the Autoridad Nacional de Aduanas, or National Customs Authority.

Customs general director Vilma De Luca said this new entity will enable the country to exploit its privileged hemispheric position as a logistic center.

Among other things, the law establishes that only those who have received training recognized by the government may serve as customs agents.
