Church reacts to violence
Worried about the rising level of violence and crime in the country, the Pastoral Social of the Catholic Church in Panama yesterday launched a campaign called "Living without Violence." The campaign will run through Lent.
"We are living in a time of widespread violence that threatens individuals and families. We must all speak and act for peace," said Patrick Hanssens, reverend and director of the Pastoral Social.
He explained that the campaign involves the distribution of a document dealing with five themes that "aid in the self-examination of attitudes that lead to violence and that will generate a process of change in one's life.
The reverend reported that 45,000 copies have been printed for distribution to 94 parishes. The leaflets will be passed out in local communities by leaders of ecclesiastical groups.
"Breaking the silence," "courage conquering fear," and "wounds not easily healed," are among the themes addressed in the leaflet.
Hanssens said that, in many ways, the control of violence rests with the authorities, but it is also the responsibility of every citizen.
"Christians cannot remain indifferent to the situation. The Gospel calls us to be makers of peace," he said.
