Government allocates funds to repair bridge

The Panamanian government has allocated $338,750 to repair the bridge over the Río Piedra in Boquerón, Chiriquí, which has been closed for the past year.
Jorge Luis Pitalúa, director of maintenance for the Ministerio de Obras Públicas (MOP), said that the company Idepsa S.A. has been awarded the contract to do the work. The bridge, which was damaged by flood waters in 2006 and is in danger of collapsing.
"Personnel and machinery will arrive in the area to begin work in the next few days," Pitalúa said.
The Piedra, Chico, Chirigagua, Chiriquí Viejo and Risacua rivers, all located in Chiriquí, overflowed in October of 2006 causing 300 people to be evacuated.
