Relocation of Penonomé dump is urged
For nearly four hours, residents of La Lomas, Villa Cumbrera, Pueblo Nuevo and nearby communities closed the road to the Penonomé dump yesterday because they want the facility moved.
Spokeman for the Penonomé community Azael Cedeño said that a six-month deadline for closing the landfill expired yesterday without any action being taken. The protestors closed the road to the dump at 7 a.m., blocking it with tree-trunks to prevent trucks from entering.
The company that runs the facility, Reciclo Enterprises, said that it has not received any direction from the provincial government on possible alternatives to the Penonomé landfill.
Local officials were at the protest and called on the provincial government to address the problem.
