Prosecutor to visit site of fatal fire

Nidia Gutiérrez, a prosecutor with the tercera de circuito de Colón, will go the Zona Libre today to inspect the building that was the site of a deadly accident that killed two firefighters.

The firefighters had responded to a blaze at Elektra Noreste in November 2007. While they were fighting the blaze, an electric shock killed two of them and injured five others.

The prosecutor is trying to determine whether the company was negligent in not shutting off the power to the site.

According to lawyers representing the families of the two men killed in the accident, there were at least 16 phone calls made to the company to shut off the power at the facility.

Company representatives, however, are maintaining that they followed instructions given to them by fire officials throughout the event.

To date Gutiérrez has interviewed 16 firefighters as part of her investigation.
