University bestows honorary degrees
The Consejo General de la Universidad de Panamá agreed yesterday to award an honorary doctorate to the president of Bolivia, Juan Evo Morales Ayma, in recognition of his status as "a symbol of the indigenous peoples of America and for his struggle for social justice."
Miguel Ángel Candanedo, secretary of the Universidad de Panamá, said that the honor will also be bestowed on the Italian socialist politician Romano Prodi, president of Italy's Council of Ministers. He said the two will be notified of the decision to see if they can visit the country to receive their degrees.
The Universidad de Panamá previously awarded honorary doctorates to Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro, president of the International Red Cross, and the Archbishop of Constantinople, Bartholomew I.
