Cámara del Transporte requests more security

Because of a recent rash of robberies, primarily in the area east of the capital, the Cámara Nacional del Transporte has asked for the government's help in adding security measures to buses.

The request comes after the shooting death of Richard Mojica, 24, who died on Jan. 7.

The bus operators want more officers assigned to riding buses to help reduce armed robberies. Other measures could include putting videocameras on buses.

For their part, some police officers have sympathized with the drivers, saying that too many officers are assigned to patrol areas such as shopping malls.

"These businesses can pay for their own security," one officer said.
