"Dead" man was living in Panama
John Darwin and his wife, Anne, who claimed her husband was dead and collected on his insurance policy, will face fraud charges.
The two protagonists in a widely-publicized insurance fraud case, John Darwin and his wife, Anne Darwin, might have been living together in Panama in recent years, according to sources at the Policía Técnica Judicial (PTY).
Ms. Darwin´s husband, John Darwin, was working as a prison officer when he disappeared in 2002. His wife told authorities he had taken his canoe into the North Sea. The wreckage of the watercraft turned up some time later. A coroner pronounced Mr. Darwin dead, and Ms. Darwin collected a large sum of money from his life insurance policy.
Yet Mr. Darwin is very much alive and currently in police custody in England. He and his wife, both British citizens, are likely to be prosecuted for fraud.
As of yesterday, neither the Policía Técnica Judicial (PTJ) nor the Ministerio Público of Panama have been asked to play a role in the investigation of the case. Sources at the PTJ confirmed yesterday that that, although they are aware of the scandal, they have received no official request to become involved in the matter. The chief of international affairs at the Ministerio Público, Greta Marchosky, has reported the same.
Ms. Darwin is known to have been in Panama at least until last Wednesday, when she had a meeting at the British Embassy.
